What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
There is (as with most things involving the Internet) some debate here. As a rule, SEO is the term used to describe the marketing technique of preparing a website for the purpose of achieving high rankings in crawler based search engines (Google, MSN, etc.). Typically the focus is on the website's content, structure, copy and page layout, and HTML Meta tags. SEO can also include attempting to deconstruct search engine algorithms for the purpose of designing web pages/web sites that will rank extremely well.
What is Search Engine Marketing (SEM)?
Search Engine Marketing is generally accepted as the umbrella term (which SEO falls under) that would also include pay per click campaigns, paid search engine listings (the sponsored listings), and other non-traditional SEO techniques. Many of these techniques can be effective and immediate! If you need a lot of traffic by noon Friday then pay per click is your method!
